Such a great leading song for an album. This track makes me feel like I just ate a can of Popeye's spinach, which is why I put it on and uppercutted my way across the dancefloor that is my parquet living room first thing this morning. I love my schedule because it allows me to indulge in listening to music at levels not permitted during most people's kept hours. Am I alone in feeling that most music is meant to be enjoyed LOUDLY? I always want to feel like I am being hit by an aural tsunami, all those decibels washing over my little body.

YES!!! SO MUCH SAX NOODLING! Everything about the production of this song is awesome. Those back up singers! Good job, Iggy. This record was in my mom's collection growing up (mom is largely responsible for a lot of my musical tastes and introducing me to le punk) and I spent an abnormally large amount of time staring at this sleeve. Weird?

I really wish I could dredge up some archival footage of Iggy playing these songs live, but no such luck. I need an intern.

Several times in the last week and a half I have bore witness to acts of adult-on-teenager/teenager-on-adult aggression. Maybe blame it on last week's full moon but people were acting craaaaaaaaayzaaaaayyy. The first instance I was cruising by on my bike so I don't know exactly what happened, but what I saw was three cops, two dude cops and one lady cop, standing by their van parked in the bike lane (one of my greatest annoyances) by the pizza place on Dekalb between Clermont and Adelphi. There is always a huge group of tweenagers hanging at that spot because they get out of school hungry and revved up and wanna congregate and snack. This is also one of my greatest annoyances, especially when it coincides with my dogwalking route and I need to be passing these fools, usually with two dogs or at the very least a dog and my bike. They are totally oblivious to their surroundings, not caring about taking up the entire sidewalk and standing in everyone's way, and 99% of the time at least one moron kid will make a big show of being scared of the dog and scream and dodge the dog in the most dramatic way possible making whatever dog I'm walking super nervous and therefore more likely to act in an erratic or dangerous way.

Anyway, the cops must've pulled over to tell the kids to move along and it seemed as though one girl in particular had mouthed off, because as I was passing, the lady cop grabbed this girl by the upper arm and threw her up against the van, like "WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT DID YOU SAY WHEN AN OFFICER TELLS YOU TO MOVE YOU MOVE YOU DON'T MOUTH BACK!"

but in this instance, I am almost embarrassed to say that I was like "Yeah, hell yeah" giving mental daps to the pigs. There is OBVIOUSLY something to be said about questioning cops and their authority, especially because so much of what they do is flagrantly motivated by class and racial profiling, but on the same token, kids these days are mouthy motherfuckers with very little respect for anyone, let alone the fuzz. Only recently have I realized that nothing scares me more than packs of teenagers because they are at an age where they don't necessarily understand consequence and they are so emboldened by mob mentality. Did the cop really need to throw this chick up against the van? NO. But did this brat really need to be acting tough to a cop? NO.

That very same night I stopped at the corner bodega to buy some ingredients for dinner on my way home from work and across the street I saw a grown ass man in a UPS delivery uniform chasing down a pack of tweenage boys. Dude was losing his damn mind screaming at these kids. From what I could gather, one of the boys must've stepped to this dude and apparently called him the F BOMB. UPS dude wasn't about to drop it because he was like "HOW YOU GONNA TALK TO ADULTS LIKE THAT? YOU DON'T KNOW ME! CALLING ME A FAGGOT! RUN YOU LITTLE FUCKERS, RUN! YOU REAL SCARED NOW!!" The kids were a quarter-block's distance away from UPS guy, flocking in safety in the doorway of a Chinese restaurant, when an adult woman swooped in and talked UPS guy down from beating these kid's tiny butts.

And lastly, I was minding my own business, walking some dogs (the beginning of any story you will hear me tell) and it was around the time that schools let out. There were two tweenage boys and one slightly younger looking girl walking at least three or four yards ahead of me. Walking in the direction towards them/me was a grown ass young man. I was not really paying attention to what the tweenagers were saying and they were at a distance that I couldn't totally hear, but apparently the boys were mouthing off or taunting the girl and as the grown ass young man passed them, he said "SHORTY, YOU WOULDN'T TALK TO YOUR MOTHER LIKE THAT SO HOW YOU GONNA TALK LIKE THAT TO A LITTLE GIRL." The girl had entered her building at the point, but I stood on the sidewalk and smiled at the grown ass young man. Later as I was bringing the dogs back into their building, the grown ass young man came in behind me and he said "Kids these days be acting crazy" to which I replied, "Yes, and I am thankful that you said something to those boys because they need to learn to respect women" and now that grown ass young man, Anthony, is my new friend.

It’s just him and me, together, alone, lost in the arctic tundra, this vast, great desert whiteness that is the abandoned city. We trample along the dead still streets, no sound except the sizzle of falling snow and our own foggy breathing, so heavy it’s almost like scuba diving, a belabored sucking in and sucking out, like the sound of outer space. The snowdrifts create a ghostly lunar appearance and the trail we leave behind us resembles those fabricated, government disseminated photographs of man’s first steps on the moon, the throbbing hangnail of conspiracy theorists everywhere. Our feet crunch along, pounding down upon layer of compacted mounds of snow upon ice upon snow upon ice upon snow upon ice ad infinitum until we reach gravel upon dirt upon sedimentary rock upon whatever else until finally there’s just molten rock, the earth’s core and then nothingness. The sky is that beautiful, sickly rose pink, a color that calls to mind sorority girl’s vomit. In my head I recite the rhyme, “Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning, sailor's warning.”

Along our path we see remnants of what we used to lovingly refer to as civilization. Abandoned cars stuck in drifts litter the streets, now covered in a thick dusting of snow. A light is still on in someone’s Subaru wagon but it’s not likely that the owner will return to turn it off. Not a light can be seen in any home now and block-by-block, row after row the streetlights shut down, electric embers dying as generators fail. Absent is the once omnipresent Christmas-y smell of wood burning. The only thing that fills our noses is bitter cold, stinging our sinuses like an acid wash. Generosity of spirit has given way to miserly hoarding as rationing has become severely stricter. Heat is now a hot commodity. The news reports screaming warnings and pointing fingers and castigating various parties for lack of response and failure to delegate have slowed down and are so infrequent that soon there will be nothing broadcasted except static, digital snow to mirror the actual fat flakes falling forever downward onto this grey earth. The city that never sleeps is k.o.’d. Someone must have slipped her a Rufi.

Here we are. We’ve entered a new ice age.

I let go of him and he goes whizzing away. Normally he is a swift shadow in the night, recalling to mind the old adage “All cats are grey in the dark”, but tonight I can see him clearly despite the great distance he’s covered in no time at all, his black shape illuminated by the pink sky and full moon reflecting off the vast expanse of snow. I stare him down. He is standing there, unmoving, watching me like I’m watching him, trying to anticipate each other’s next actions. This snowy silence is unnerving. Standing on the edge of the great white abyss, it is impossible not to feel completely hopeless. The field is blanketed in one giant dollop of heavy whipping cream. I can see the plumes of his breath across the void. I call to him. The sound of my voice is hollow and reverberates off of everything. Like a shot being let off, he is racing back toward me and I brace myself for his impact on my body should he collide with me. He nicks my side, nearly taking out my knee. For a second I can’t tell if I’m being herded or hunted. He speeds away again, this time in the opposite direction. We make several passes with this charade. He tags a new part of me every time he blazes by, knee, hip, other hip, other knee, almost debilitating me.

I smile to myself as I watch him run away from me again and again. Each time he gets closer to his true essence, his most animal self. He seems nearly free. It is the closest thing I can approximate to freedom. As the city shuts down and signs of human life slow to a stop, we leave the shackles of societal constraint behind in nature’s majestically destructive wake. If we could let go of all the fads, the gimmicks, the novelties, inventions, progress, then maybe we could be free. We approach the monument, an evil midnight megalith piercing the primrose sky. Usually lit, it is bathed in blackness tonight, as it has been for the last few nights and will most likely remain until it returns to dirt. I, for one, will not be sad to see it razed to the cold, cold ground. I am walking slowly, encumbered by standing erect and the unfortunate misalignment of my imperfect human form. Gravity’s brutal force has been unkind to me, ripping me to terra firma. He is moving faster and with more ease, bent over on all fours, the wildest, most savage werewolf of my dreams.

Everything around us is perfect stillness and blinding whiteness and we are terribly alone. I am beginning to take solace in this when out of the corner my eye I see him careening toward me and in front of him an even smaller and horribly terrified animal. This may very well be the last living thing besides us, the only other living thing we will encounter for the rest of our lives. I am unafraid of him seizing upon it and tearing it limb from limb. There is no chase in him, no instinct to kill. Most likely he hasn’t even seen the scared animal, as his eyesight isn’t so good, but it’s running for its life, no doubt. This beautiful creature is camouflaged against the snow, a magical all-white cat. It flies up a tree. I strain to spot it in the high bows of the bank of tall Birch and Beech; I didn’t see which tree it went up. It’s difficult to make out its feline shape, hidden so cleverly amongst the clumps of collected snow in the eves of all the branches. I am panicked. If it remains in the tree it may freeze to death. It will likely meet the demise of so many others since the onset of the Ice Age. I feel responsible for this sentient thing, all the while trying to keep one eye on him so as not to be deserted. There is a safety in numbers. I am convinced of the importance of staying together, if only to provide the other with solace and eventually, possibly sustenance should it come to that.

I finally see her, this cat I’ve decided is a girl. I cry to her, “Come here, kitty. Come down. Don’t be scared. Please don’t be scared.” But it’s no use. She stares unblinking at me, fear and anger writ large in her glowing, nocturnal eyes. Her posture is stiff. She will not be coming down so long as we are here. I keep turning back as we wander away, trying to see her. I offer her a quick little atheistic prayer that she comes down and makes it to safety; that she doesn’t succumb to the night.

We amble on, ready to retire. My legs feel heavy. I flash a memory of falling down laughing, legs wobbly from swimming in strong currents, riding the waves, running in sand with no traction. There is sun in the memory. My skin is warm, radiating heat. But this is snow, not sand, and I lift feet weighted by thick boots. It is forever night and there is no such thing as home now. Where do we go?

Last Thursday Jen and I went to see Sex and the City 2 at Cobble Hill. In preparation for seeing what I was afraid would turn out to be the next most anti-feminist film since He's Just Not That Into You (shudder) I read absolutely no reviews. I was sure that anything I read about the film would make it the most uncomfortable 146 minutes of my life. Surprisingly, it wasn't. Maybe I had really low expectations for the film, but I actually kinda enjoyed it. Here's why.

Just like Gossip Girl today, SATC has always been escapism for me. It is the guilty pleasure vehicle by which I can fantasize about the lives of an echelon of New York City that I can only pretend to know. Sometimes I think I've snuck a glance at it, like when I'm hustling my way to the Met and I see the tiny society ladies with their perfectly coiffed hair and their fur coats, teetering on designer heels, walking, but most likely carrying, their tiny, perfectly coiffed yappydogs™. They are like cartoons of rich women, but perhaps they are the donors or trustees making it possible for me to "pay what I wish", usually whatever change is jangling in my pockets. While they are sitting on boards and attending the annual costume gala I am watching SATC dreaming of Louboutins and ultra chic, ultra exclusive parties. A girl can dream, can't she? Not that I would trade my "poor punk" lifestyle for that of a socialite, but I need to indulge my girly-girl side from time to time.

Jen hipped me to a conversation between Sarah Jessica Parker and Leonard Lopate where SJP surmises that SATC is her character Carrie Bradshaw's fantasy of New York City, that the other characters only exist as fictionalized fodder for her columns and books. I love the fantasy aspect of SATC. I just love it.

SJP goes further to admit that the most unrealistic aspects of SATC are the outfits and the amount of time the four main characters are able to spend together. Duh duh duh duh duh. Thank you.

One of the major accusations hurled at the film by critics is its blatant and crass classicism. I won't lie. The characters are out of touch with the way "the other half" lives. Be that as it may, I must ask how does the classism in SATC 2 differ from the series or the first movie? The most offensive example of this occurs when Miranda and Charlotte toast and drink "to them", them being women who don't have around-the-clock live-in nannies or housekeepers. Was I offended? No. Maybe it's because I am not a frustrated mother. Or maybe it's because I am not that hard up. While I earn well under the poverty line, I manage to get by in New York City. I walk dogs, I hold babies, I look at art. Who could complain?

Still, I don't think SATC 2 forgets or alienates its audience. When I looked around the theater before the screening started I noticed a fairly diverse audience in attendance; age range from around 20 to upwards of 70 years old, by my best guess, various economic backgrounds and earning potentials, black, white, asian, latina (I only qualify the turnout as being fairly diverse because I think we noted only one man present.) The crowd giggled, whooped, snickered and whispered their comments along with the progression of the movie, all in good fun. Walking out of the theater no one seemed outraged by what they'd just witnessed. There's a reason why films like this make money and do well at the box office. There's a reason why women were planning to fly from all over world to attend opening night festivities in New York City as we read on various online forums in anticipation of the film's release.

So, deride SATC 2 for promoting dumbed down feminism if you must. Dumbed down feminism? SO WHAT. At least it's not blatantly anti-feminist such as HJNTIY. I'd rather watch a funny, albeit problematic, movie marketed to women, starring grown women, about adult female friendships, than a movie that utilizes exploitative violence or sex to garner box office numbers. I'll get my kicks where I can.

Also worth reading, a breakdown of the misogynistic language used in SATC 2 reviews. Boo hiss.

If insipid, frivolous blockbusters do not suit you and you are looking for something of more subtance, I highly recommend Living In Emergency. Zac and I saw this film Saturday evening and I've been thinking about it ever since. It provides an insightful and grizzly look into the lives and journeys of volunteers within MSF. It is playing at select theaters now (at the Sunshine here in NYC) but it's a short engagement so don't sleep on it. Please support this film and organization.

In a way, blogging isn’t all that new, a historian says. Informal writing combining pithiness with provocation stirred up the politics of Renaissance Italy and prerevolutionary France.

Bad news for me. I suppose I shouldn't ask for my bagel extra-toasted/burnt every time.

It was a glorious spring weekend and it made me fall in love with New York, just a little bit. I sunned myself in the park for a few hours on Saturday afternoon and people-watched. There were babes in bikinis and dogs a plenty. A ladybug landed on me; an auspicious omen, I'd like to believe. I can't wait for it to be slightly more consistently warm and sunny so I can put my ill-fated habanero plant on the fire escape to reap the benefits of aforementioned ladybug and friends. Poor dude has had a major aphid infestation winterlong and I've been handpicking those fuckers off of it. We're in need of natural assistance.

And it was a star-studded week. I saw Kerri Russell in DUMBO. I saw Liza Minelli and Zachary Quinto in Times Square. And I saw Maggie Gyllenhaal in a really cool romper at the farmer's market.

This is probably my most favorite, gratuitous HOT 97 jam of the moment. It has a quality akin to family affair in its slinky, slow hook. I love Drake's verse, but unfortunately, lyrically this song deeply denies the reality of economic trauma that this country is still reeling from. As Jessica Hopper so aptly puts it, American radio pop right now is arguably at its most materialistic—an ugly nadir reflecting the end-times capitalism of our recent past. The closest Drake comes to acknowledging how first world economies have shit the bed is rapping that while he's on a 24 hour champagne diet, he doesn't have to pay for it because the club owner supply it. Drinking for free is always nice when you don't have any cream, but I'm sure Drake isn't hurting in that department.

Moving onward...

Can we discuss how dumb this video is? The song is ok, but I cringe every time the Eminem verse drops. It totally breaks continuity with the rest of the song. It just doesn't fit. Whoever his managers are should receive a round of applause for arranging this attempt at career revival. His sound/flow is so old! Ancient in terms of pop years! Retire already, fogey! Also, Kanye! I stuck my dick inside this life until that bitch came?! Really?!! Rapiest lyrics ever!!! The entire concept for this video is one big HJ to Lebron James. I suppose I understand that equating the hard work/determination/responding hard in the face of adversity (read: CAPITALISM CREATION MYTH) storyline between professional sports and professional rappin' is nothing new, but I feel it is a tad trite/redundant/reductive/oblique in this case.

Amanda Hess might have a new chart topper. This is the hardest part for me about pop culture/music. The song is so catchy and of course I love it, I am meant to love it, but the lyrics are basically about raping someone. She don't know that we're going back to the crib. There is absolutely no nuance there. The unsuspecting female in Juelz and/or Chris Brown's company is gonna get got. And this coming from Chris Brown too! HOLY WTF!! What are his people thinking? I followed this link from Jessica Hopper's blog. After the reading the interview I've thought about it a lot.

Isn't that how we all feel? All of us, anybody that cares about making things and putting them out there in the world for other people to look at, or listen to, or think and talk about? Miranda July has that uncanny ability to do it, to make or say the things that feel universal, that tap into that core of emotion that is instantly relatable to each of our little lives. As all things Miranda is wont to do, this interview just makes me fall more in love with her. Also, did not know she is involved with Mike Mills! Total dream couple. His interview segments in Beautiful Losers really stole the show for me.

The questions posed by Khaela Maricich and Jarvis Cocker and Miranda's respective answers are pretty wonderful.

The pop cultural enthusiast in me wants to cry right now.

In other really important and relevant news, one of the families I babysit for is Hollywood-connected so they get all the "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION" Academy nominated movies before the awards sweeps. BONUS for me. Last night I watched It's Complicated, otherwise known as OMGAlec Baldwin. It was a nice, fluffy movie and it made me decide once and for all that I like Meryl Streep. I kind of could not have cared less before. After seeing Julie and Julia, I can't not think of her as a warbling Julia Child all the time (which I love every second of.) The one major qualm I had with It's Complicated is that it has several Meet the Faulkers type moments that are so awkward and nerve racking that my face feels it is stuck in perma-cringe. Also, Alec Baldwin is a very sexy and debonair older man with clothes on. Unclothed he looks like a stuffed sausage of a beast. Do you think they used a butt double for that one scene? Holler at me if you know what I'm talking about.

What I loved about the movie is the obvious and very lame usage of pop cultural colloquialisms. "Do you poke smot?" AHHHHHHHHH!!!!! I always enjoy scenes in which older parents, feeling their age and out of touch the youth of today, try recreational drugs in hopes to get back to their juvenescence. Speaking of juvenescence, even though she only has a bit part really, Rita Wilson looks so good. And John Krasinski (Harley? Really?? Nancy Meyers couldn't create another name for this character?) is SO CUTE.

Is it just me or is this song absolutely effing ridiculous? While listening to this song for the bajillionth time on Hot 97 as I cleaned my house top to bottom, I wondered to myself "Where is the female response to this song?"

Remember the days when a lady or a girl-group would release a controversial song and subsequently a dude or a guy-group would drop a song in response? I miss that kind of tit-for-tat competitive oneupmanship, especially when it concerned a battle of the sexes and who can be more righteous.

Par exemple:

This song is amazing and the clip is so blatantly directed by Hype Williams. It's somehow a very dated look now, but at the time everyone and everything looked like a futuristic cyberpunk on the set of Hackers or something.

Also, TLC. Come on, TLC were so gooooood. I don't think such an all-girl pop group exists today. They were incredibly hot, sex positive ("Baby Baby Baby", "Red Light Special"), repped safe sex practices ("Waterfalls"), and had songs that ran the gamut from how hard it is to maintain a healthy female self image ("Unpretty") as well as how to ditch a loser dude who doesn't value you/leeches off you ("No Scrubs"). They were totally balls-out feminist and had major radio play and had videos in heavy rotation and were voted "hottest babes of the year" or something to that effect. Holy hell, where are my feminist pop queens of now! I'm getting beside myself...

Obviously, TLC won this round because who even remembers Sporty Theivz, but the concept is what I'm talking about! I want the response songs.

P.S. How great is the shot in this video where the dude is standing in the park covered in actual pigeons!!! Whaaaaaaaaaattttt thhhhheeeeeeee fffffffffffffff. I am a little shocked and bummed though, to espy someone who looks a lot like Eve hanging with Sporty Theivs at the end of the song. Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Can somebody confirm?

I am sorry for being so negligent. It's just that I've been simultaneously super busy/very boring and because of this I am tongue tied.

I don't know why I slept on Mary Lou Lord for so long, but for the last two weeks I've been suffering serious bouts of nostalgia, and her music fits in to those cracks of memory perfectly. The changing of the seasons gets me every time. I think the fall, especially, carries the weight of all that is New England to me, old, musty, covered in sea spray, a damp misty morning fog, witchery and the smell of fires a burnin' ev'rywhere. It's the kind of thing that only those of us born within its 6 states can understand (the kind of thing that those begot in the mid-Atlantic region only pretend to understand.) It's in the blood.

I am really intrigued by Mary's history as a busker in London, Boston and elsewhere, and I've always read her name amongst Kill Rock Star's roster, and now listening to got no shadow on repeat I feel like I must make my pilgrimage back to Boston, a city I never lived in but might as well have considering the amount of time I spent (or wasted?) there as an adolescent.

Speaking of adolescents/adolescence, I am still wowing over Whip It! (Astute review here.) I want to be 17 years old again (NOT!!! I was a terror at 17, completely miserable, but kind of yeah, I still want to be 17.) Mostly Whip It! made me want to be part of a roving, ranting girlpack. I want a team of screaming banshees to fuck shit up with by my side at all times, just complete fierce, feral animals as bffs. I love rollerskating, but I fear getting hurt. I love extreme sports/Bad News Bears/Ladybugs-esque films. And I love this new spat of very fun, albeit imperfect, movies about girl adolescence, written, directed, and produced by womens.

And I love the new man candy starring as Juno's love interest in Whip It! SWOOOOOOOooooooooonnnnnNNN, What an elfin dreamsicle! Isn't it funny that he wrote the song that is used in this commercial? A friend of mine sings an excellent parody of this song that goes "I like cute girls, and puppies and kittens..." I would watch Whip It! again for many reasons, one of them being to stare that this hunk for another hour and 51 minutes.

Over the weekend I drove on over to the Sweet Local Farm to hang with Karen, Luke, Kitty Tofu, Goats Rosie and Birch and the chickens.

Karen and I got busy, dug some trenches in a corner of the garden, and stuck our hands in the good earth, planting several rows of garlic. garlic Garlic GARLIC!!! I can't wait to eat some of those freshly laid eggs with garlic scape pesto (Kar-Gar, are you reading?)

We wiled away the afternoon trekking through a corn maze, eating fresh apple cider donuts and waiting for Miss Jaclyn Marie to join us. Then Luke made us an amazing dinner: fiore di zucca (stuffed + beer battered + fried squash blossoms with herbed tofutti cream cheese made from blossoms and herbs from the garden.) It was ridiculously delicious.

I know I have big plans, but no matter where I land, I want to have the blessing of dirt under my fingernails, good company at the table and good food on my plate... AND... you will never be able to shake New England out of my hair!!!

This song has been stuck in my head for two weeks, partly due in fact that it was on the soundtrack of Adventureland, which Zac and I watched recently. (I thought it was a really good movie, why didn't it get very good reviews/tank in the box office? I especially loved the character of Lisa P. God, I want to be Lisa P. except for her limited, Catholic, anti-woman p.o.v. Mostly I just want to look and dance like her.)

This song was also sung karaoke-style along to acoustic guitar accompaniment in the hotel room blow out afterparty of the wedding I was at this past weekend.

The lyrics are a little pervy. "You know I like my girls a little bit older... Stay the night but keep it undercover." Gross. Coasting on the coat tails of bigger 80s hitmakers (Ummmm, The Police?) they never managed to break out of realm of the one hit wonder but it still is a really catchy, albeit creepy, song. The video is also ridiculous and perfect in that early music video way. Did I mention that I think the singer is kind of cute? Is that weird?

I feel esp. cracked out this morning. Last night the dog I was sitting vomited for two hours (she's ok now), my phone died and I got my period all at the same time. Needless to say I didn't get any sleep. Grimblegromble.

In other news, I went to Coney Island last night, and bittersweet as it was because it's starting to feel like summer is over, I rode the Cyclone and it made me love my life.

It is 3 bucks cheaper if you decide to ride it a second time. We declined, but then I regretted it hard when I got home.

Also, I would not recommend the swinging cars on the Wonder Wheel.

Coney Island is the place that dreams are made of. It is so trashy and romantic all at once.

I've had two really bizarre, super creepy dreams yesterday and today, in the wee hours of the morning when I'm usually hitting my REM stride. (As a side note, I hope I never have a real job, meaning 40 hours/5 days a week, that requires me to be anywhere before 10. I get my best, deepest sleep from 7-9 am and if I can't get my main best sleep I can't be my main best self.)

The first dream, yesterday morning, I was on a big boat, like a ferry or mini-cruise yacht type rig, with a bunch of other people who were all familiar people, like friends and family, and we kept stopping off in various places where we'd swim and have to perform these tasks or something, almost like a adventure game show or Road Rules Semester at Sea. At one destination I had to jump from the boat and land on an old decrepit raft and swim out and grab something (?) and then jump from a few things on to other things like on Wipe Out. It was really grueling and I was so exhausted afterward. Back on the boat, I realized I was pregnant (?), like super pregnant, but I was to be someone's surrogate. There was no question in my mind that the child was mine. I knew I was carrying it for someone else, but I felt like I hadn't been properly asked or informed on what it would entail and I was super freaked out so I went to have a shower, which was an outdoor shower, not a shower on the boat (?) and I realized I had a tampon in so I pulled it out and somehow this caused my pregnant stomach to deflate and then I couldn't figure out if I was still pregnant or not and I had this overwhelming feeling that whoever I was the surrogate for was going to be very mad at me... Then I woke up!

This morning's dream, I again was with a group of people, but it was a much smaller group of people, just my family and Zac maybe? And we had been swimming all day, going to various ponds and lakes and beaches and taking dips. Everywhere we were swimming I had this fear in the back of my head that there was some kind of creature, like a shark or water snake or something cold and scaly and fucked up that was going to injure me as I swam but I was laughing and having a good time and doing a good job of putting it out of my head. So we end up at this one spot, that is kind of marshy, and we're swimming and as we're swimming I notice there is something weird floating in the water a ways off, but I can't tell what it is, but it looks furry. We're swimming and swimming and having a grand old time, and as a joke someone kinda throws me and I land in the spot where the furry thing is. I come up from air out of the water and it smells like rotting, decaying animal and I freak and as I'm looking around I see all these body parts and tufts of hair floating in the water and I see what seems to be a fox's face and a deer's head but in total there are three dismembered animals floating around me and I try to swim away and I am kicking and pushing as hard as I can but my feet come up against one of the animal's mushy, dead body. I finally swim to shore and I feel so disgusted and horrified that I demand to have a shower, to which my mother tries to convince me not to bathe because we are in a rush to get somewhere, to go out to dinner or something, but I am desperate to wash the cold, dead feeling off me and even as I shower in warm water I can't shake that terrible creeped out feeling which feels like it's inside of me at this point... And then I wake up!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Dreams are so weird.

The Hunger is a freaky movie! I love vampire movies, because The Vampire, as character and theme, is age old and hilarious in terms of cultural significance and signifier.

Released in 1983, starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, and a tittie-baring Susan Sarandon (what more could one ask for), The Hunger is bizarre in the sense that these are vampires dying, and not by a silver stake and human hand. In the beginning of the film, David Bowie's vampire is dying from an unexplained complication despite being promised by his lover, Deneuve, that he would live forever when she initiated him. He contacts a scientist played by Sarandon who is studying aging in monkeys in hopes of discovering a cure for a disease that causes rapid aging in children. Essentially he wants a cure for the rapid aging he is suddenly experiencing. No amount of fresh blood can set back his internal clock, stuck in permanent fast forward. He presumably dies and Deneuve takes on Sarandon as her new vampire disciple in a classic lesbian-vampire love bond. Sarandon then eats her overbearing, controlling, demeaning, mean boyfriend/husand/whatever he is (! !!) when he comes searching for her at the lesbian-vampire manse. Then Deneuve goes pSyChO on Sarandon and in a fit of passion sucks her little lover a tad too dry.

***SPOILER ALERT*** The bizarrest bizarre surprise of all: Bowie is not dead, just undead, an undead vampire zombie, AND HE IS UGLY AND PISSED, and he and all the other lovers that Deneuve has forsaken in her promise of eternal life rise and throw Deneuve down a bajillion flights of stairs and as she falls she thrashes about in what seems like sexual ecstasy until her beautiful face (gosh, Catherine Deneuve is unbelievably beautiful and so sexy) turns into an hideous, scary skull face and POOF she turns to a pile of dust and hair.

And of course, the convention of all conventions, especially in the horror genre, especially in the vampire genre, Sarandon has not died either. She has skipped town, shipped off to London, and she has taken the place of her former lover, Deneuve, as the initiator of innocents into the (lesbian) vampire lifestyle, lured with the promise of eternal life and beauty and gratifying sexual conquest.
